Take Me Away
There he was. With his big hazel brown eyes, staring right at me. I could see him breathe through his nostrils. His breath so warm I could feel it against my body. He looked so calm and his eyes were shining as bright as the harvest moon. His face was wide and he looked old. Not ancient, just old.
When did he get here? How(!) did he get here? It’s awkwardly quiet. Do the other’s see him too? Maybe I’m dreaming.
“Ouch!” I pinched myself.
Okay, so I’m not dreaming. Maybe it’s just me imagining things. Again.
"Come with me" he said with a firm, yet ever so soothing voice. His voice deep and strong. You could feel it vibrating in your chest. It made me smile.
Wait. How can this be? I can hear him, but his mouth isn’t opening. He's not using his lips. Is he reading my mind? This must be a dream. Things like this don’t happen in real life, do they? Well... Certainly not to people like me.
“Hold on tight” he told me with what looked like a slight grin. I wasn’t afraid.
As I embraced him from behind we took off. We started to float. Higher and higher, there was clearly no stopping us. We were so close I could feel his heart beat. It made me tranquil me, even though I didn’t know his name.
He wouldn’t tell me where we were going.
“Patience, young one.” He mumbled.
My body shivered and I started to feel a bit cold. That’s when I noticed how high we were. So high the stars appeared so close I could reach up and grasp them out of the night sky.
As we burst through a final cluster of clouds, he slowly came to a halt and we started to hover. When I looked down I could barely distinguish the houses from each other.
While I sat there on the back of his neck, I noticed how long his tail was and how his scales twinkled like the brightest of diamonds. His skin was so dark and blue. Like the purest of sapphires.
He spoke to me. His words flowed through my body, almost as if they were burning into my soul. Words of wisdom filling my slower beating heart, explaining how I should be more open to prosperity and that in time all will be okay. He told me stories of love, hardship and also brutal reality, and explained how besides all that one day everything will be okay. It pierced through me like a wonderful cliche.
Slowly we started moving again, heading back down in a zig-zag pattern. It made the way down last longer and I was actually able to enjoy it. I could feel the difference in the air up here, it was nice. I caressed his back.
“Wow!” That was unexpected. His scales, they’re not sharp. They are the exact opposite. They feel sleek and cool.
We were getting closer to the water and he was picking up his speed.
“Wait. Slow down!” I begged. “We’re going to crash into the sea!”
He wasn’t responding. I was terrified. The water looked so dark and it must be cold this late at night. He isn’t going to stop. I braced for impact.
I felt a sudden shock pass through my body as we crashed down in to the ocean. I shut my eyes tightly as I grasped his neck, fearing I would detach and drown.
“You need to open your eyes” I heard him whisper.
“No! I... can’t. I won’t.” I stuttered.
“Trust me” he said with a potent tone.
I slowly started to open my eyes. Gasp! I couldn’t believe it. The water wasn’t dark at all. The moonlight was piercing through it and lighting up the whole ocean floor. We were spiraling down to the bottom of the sea, and then it hit me... Time seems to have stopped, but when? No. Time didn’t stop, we were just moving so fast everything else appeared slower. I lifted my hand and touched a fish. It started to glow and slowly wiggled its tail. I saw sparkling coral and bright starfish. Right out of a fairytale, that’s what it looked like.
We reached the bottom. It was sandy. He glazed the floor and then started to ascend.
“This is as far as I go,” he told me as I let myself slide off his back. A feeling of both sadness and contentment hit me as I stepped back on to the coastal cliff.
As the mighty dragon swiftly faded away into the lost evening horizon I felt blissful. I knew that I was never going to be alone again.
A Flash Fiction piece I wrote for my the new writing workshop I'm following. Reminiscing on a dream I had long ago
Hey Tittel! Long time since I've been around.
This is so, so, so neat! I love how you gradually had the audience learn about the dragon through the flight, and how beautiful the descriptions were. Very nice work for flash fiction.
And it must have been a wonderful dream, too! While reading this, I felt like singing "A Whole New World" from Aladdin.
